e-Presentation by Mark D. Cole
Topic
The e-presentation provides a comprehensive review of recent rulings of the CJEU and the ECtHR affecting audiovisual media services and the wider media sector. It analyses a broad range of judgments and pending cases concerning media law. The presentation examines the implications of the Makeleio and Zougla v ESR (C-556/23) cases, which concern the protection of human dignity in relation to online broadcasters. It also provides a detailed overview of several cases addressing the interplay between fundamental rights and media law in the context of media regulation in Hungary, including Commission v Hungary (C-769/22) and Commission v Hungary (Klubrádió) (C-92/23). In addition, the presentation analyses the overlap between data protection and media law in Russmedia and Inform Media Press (C-492/23), as well as recent CJEU decisions concerning platforms and Big Tech companies. Finally, it reviews the ECtHR judgment in Bradshaw v United Kingdom, which concerns the State’s obligations in relation to disinformation and “influence campaigns” that threaten democracy.Speaker
